{"id":858,"date":"2019-07-19T10:36:02","date_gmt":"2019-07-19T14:36:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unirea.org\/?p=858"},"modified":"2019-07-20T00:06:03","modified_gmt":"2019-07-20T04:06:03","slug":"lessons-for-earth-50-years-after-first-moon-landing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unirea.org\/ro\/2019\/07\/19\/lessons-for-earth-50-years-after-first-moon-landing\/","title":{"rendered":"Lessons for Earth: 50 years after first moon landing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.unirea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Tony-Magliano-01.jpg?resize=139%2C173&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-461\" width=\"139\" height=\"173\"\/><figcaption>Tony Magliano<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you were at least 10-years-old on July 20, 1969, you will surely\nremember that your eyes were glued to a black and white television set watching\nwhat no eyes had ever seen before. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will remember, as I do, the excitement of seeing on screen animation of a lunar module steadily descending toward a first ever human moon landing, together with voices from Mission Control in Houston communicating with the lunar module crew, and all topped off with narration from the legendary American newscaster Walter Cronkite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zYnF31el-ik?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=ro-RO&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But what viewers around the world didn\u2019t know was that\nlunar module astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were in trouble. As they\napproached the moon\u2019s surfaced they discovered that they were off course from\ntheir preprogrammed landing site and headed toward a field of boulders and\ncraters. Commander Armstrong took over the controls and flew the lunar module \u2013\nnamed \u201cEagle\u201d \u2013 manually in search for an open level spot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With fuel diminishing quickly Armstrong sited his\nspot. The descent engine was then fired up, but it kicked up so much lunar dust\nthat visibility became extremely poor. Armstrong had to use a few boulders\npiercing through the dust cloud to estimate the distance from the moon\u2019s\nsurface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly after Mission Control\u2019s warning that they had just 30 seconds of fuel remaining, Neil Armstrong calmly uttered these famous words: \u201cHouston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wow! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the excitement didn\u2019t stop there. Read on at\nSpace.com (<a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2H9LNxj\">https:\/\/bit.ly\/2H9LNxj<\/a>).&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Space and space exploration is fascinating; especially\nsince it easily helps one to see our awesome God reflected in his awesome\ncreation! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And so, while I am hopeful that humankind will\nseriously pursue travel out into the cosmos, I am hoping far more importantly\nthat all of us will urgently commit ourselves first to cleaning up and\nprotecting our common home \u2013 planet Earth!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pope Francis in the first ever papal environmental\nencyclical (\u201cLaudato Si\u2019: On Care of our Common Home\u201d) writes , \u201cEach year hundreds of millions of tons of\nwaste are generated, much of it non-biodegradable, highly toxic and\nradioactive, from homes and businesses, from construction and demolition sites,\nfrom clinical, electronic and industrial sources. The earth, our home, is\nbeginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth\u201d (see: <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2LqORVS\">https:\/\/bit.ly\/2LqORVS<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Holy Father added, \u201cA very solid scientific consensus indicates that we are presently witnessing a disturbing warming of the climatic system\u201d (see: <a href=\"http:\/\/climate.nasa.gov\/scientific-consensus\/\">http:\/\/climate.nasa.gov\/scientific-consensus\/<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe problem is aggravated by a model of development based on the\nintensive use of fossil fuels\u201d \u2013 that is coal, oil and gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pope urgently calls for global conversion from the use of these fossil fuels to \u201cclean renewable energy\u201d \u2013 wind, solar and geothermal (see Earth Policy Institute <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1JaEb9B\">http:\/\/bit.ly\/1JaEb9B<\/a>).&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pope Francis urges, \u201cToday, however, we have to realize that a true ecological approach <em>always <\/em>becomes a social approach; it must integrate questions of justice in debates on the environment, so as to hear <em>both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1961, U.S. President John F. Kennedy successfully challenged America to \u201ccommit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out [the 60s], of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to earth.\u201d &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now let\u2019s do something far greater. Let\u2019s work and pray to achieve by the end of the coming decade the full hearing and healing of \u201cthe cry of the earth and the cry of the poor\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Tony Magliano is an internationally syndicated social justice and peace columnist.
