The Holy Spirit is my&nbsp;<em>personal&nbsp;<\/em>Savior, because \u2018no one can say, \u201cJesus is Lord,\u201d except by the holy Spirit,\u2019 (1 Cor. 12:3).\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"176\" height=\"234\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.unirea.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Bishop-John-Michael-Botean.jpg?resize=176%2C234&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16\"\/><figcaption>Bishop John Michael Botean<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I was an undergrad in philosophy at The Catholic University of America when I had the opportunity to attend an off-campus lecture by the Very Rev. Alexander Schmemann, Dean of St. Vladimir Orthodox Seminary in New York and one of the most eminent English-speaking theologians in the Orthodox world. His lecture was based on what was then a his newly-released book, <em>Of Water and the Spirit: A Liturgical Study of Baptism<\/em>. This book became a major text, found on the required reading list in at least one course in CUA\u2019s School of Theology by the next year. Together with the lecture I was about to hear, <em>Of Water and the Spirit<\/em> was foundational for me, dramatically affecting my later approach, as a priest, to all the sacraments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After an introduction given by William Cardinal\nBaum, then Archbishop of Washington, Father Schmemann opened by relating a\nstory about an ecumenical event he once attended. He had found himself seated\nalongside the Episcopal delegation. Asking how this came about, he was told\nthat it was because the Episcopalians, like the Orthodox, had a strong\ntradition of liturgy. His reply: \u201cPut me next to the Quakers. They love the\nHoly Spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t recall the reaction of the crowd, but a\nlight certainly went on in me. Father Alexander lectured on, his deep bass\nvoice outlining what I took to be an entirely revolutionary approach to Baptism,\nas well as a powerful, creative approach to its celebration that involved the\nentire eucharistic assembly, rather than (as he put it) a small family group in\nthe dark corner of an empty church. I was struck by the vivid images he presented,\nspeaking of the apparent innocence of an infant belying the cosmic struggle\nbetween good and evil already taking place in that innocent\u2019s life, on account\nof which the Church would step in powerfully in Christ\u2019s name through the sacraments\nof Christian initiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Byzantine world, Catholic as well as\nOrthodox, the sacraments (or \u201cmysteries,\u201d to use Byzantine terminology) of Baptism,\nChrismation (Confirmation), and Eucharist are all celebrated together. Neither the\nSeal of the Gift of the Holy Spirit (Chrismation) nor participation in the Body\nof Christ (Eucharist) is separated liturgically from immersion into the life, death,\nresurrection, and immortal life of Christ through the waters of Baptism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what does this have to do with Quakers?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditional worship in the Society of Friends,\nor Quakers, involves sitting in silence, awaiting the work of the Holy Spirit.\nWhen someone is moved, or \u201cinspired,\u201d to speak, he or she speaks the word he or\nshe has received. <em>Without this\ninspiration, nothing happens<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a somewhat similar emphasis in the\nByzantine theology of the Trinity: it is the Spirit who completes, perfects,\nand <em>personalizes<\/em> everything that God\ndoes in Christ. The Holy Spirit is never left out of the conversationwhen talking about the sacraments, the\nlife of the individual Christian, or, indeed, the entire Christian\ndispensation. Among the very purposes of Christ\u2019s redemptive suffering is the\noutpouring of the Holy Spirit into the world. As Jesus himself says, \u201cBut I\ntell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go, the\nAdvocate will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you,\u201d John\n16:7-8 (NABre). Through Christ, the world has entered the Age of the Church, what\nByzantines refer to liturgically as \u201ctime after Pentecost,\u201d since Christians,\nby their baptism, are bearers of the Spirit in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of the mysteries (sacraments) include an <em>epiclesis<\/em>, an explicit invocation of the\nHoly Spirit to carry out, perfect, and <em>personalize<\/em>\nthe work of sanctification in the sacrament. In Baptism itself, the Holy Spirit\nis called upon to sanctify the water and give it the power to bring about the\nrebirth of the person about to be baptized in it: baptismal water is not\nblessed in advance but consecrated for each celebration. Immediately after the\ntriple immersion of Baptism, the newly baptized is anointed with Holy Chrism,\nsealing the new Christian <em>personally<\/em>\nwith the gift of the Holy Spirit as the pledge of eternal life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The emphasis given to the Holy Spirit in\nByzantine theology is thus explicit, and yet different from that found in the\nCharismatic movement. When, then, I am asked if Jesus Christ is my personal Savior,\nI think of Father Schmemann\u2019s tongue-in-cheek humor and answer with a bit of my\nown: \u201cNo. Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world. The Holy Spirit is my <em>personal <\/em>Savior, because \u2018no one can\nsay, \u201cJesus is Lord,\u201d except by the holy Spirit,\u2019 (1 Cor. 12:3).\u201d\n\nAs Quakers\u2014and Byzantines\u2014would say, without the\nHoly Spirit nothing happens.\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;&#8220;Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world.
