Maximos Davies<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s be honest. Prayer can be very boring! I know a monk\nisn\u2019t supposed to admit this. But let\u2019s be honest. In an exhortation included\nin the service for the Mystery of Holy Confession, the priest says to the\npenitent: \u201chide nothing from the physician of souls and bodies.\u201d Hide nothing,\nbe honest. How else can the doctor prescribe a treatment unless we\u2019re honest\nabout all our symptoms, even the ones by which we\u2019re most embarrassed. And what\ncould be more embarrassing for a professional pray-er than the admission that his\nprayer is, well, so often just so boring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This problem is well recognized by the Fathers. Here\u2019s something St. John Climacus wrote in his Sixth Century, <em>Ladder of Divine Ascent, <\/em>Step 13, \u201cOn Despondency\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>At the third hour the demon of despondency<\/em> <em>produces shivering, headache, and even colic. At the<\/em> <em>ninth hour the sick man gathers his strength. And when<\/em> <em>the table is laid he jumps out of bed. But the hour of<\/em> <em>prayer has come; again the body is weighed down. He<\/em> <em>had begun to pray, but it steeps him in sleep, and tears<\/em> <em>his response to shreds with untimely yawns.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Restlessness in prayer is actually rather a good sign in\nsome ways. It proves, firstly, that we\u2019re actually doing some prayer, albeit\nimperfectly. Wasn\u2019t it Chesterton who said that if a thing is worth doing, it\u2019s\nworth doing badly? Well that\u2019s certainly the case with the thing most worth\ndoing in all the world! So don\u2019t be discouraged by the tedium. Instead see it\nas a challenge to be overcome. But in order to overcome it, we need to think\nabout the roots of the boredom: where does it come from? What follows is one\nsuggestion based on my own experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems to me that one of the main reasons we find our\nconversations with God so tedious is that the person we\u2019re speaking to isn\u2019t\nreally God at all. Not the real God. Some version of God we\u2019ve made up to\nreplace the real One.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think the evidence for this is that anyone who perseveres\nin prayer does so because at some point, or maybe even at multiple points, he\nor she has experienced something of the real God. Some moment of clarity, of\nawe or joy, something numinous and impossible to express in words. We know what\nthe real thing is. And the \u201cGod\u201d we speak to regularly in prayer just isn\u2019t the\nsame God at all. How could he be? He\u2019s so boring!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why do we content ourselves with this boring counterfeit\ngod, with an idol? There must be some payoff for us? Looking at myself, I\u2019m\nconvinced that most often I prefer my own version of god to the true God because\nthe god I invent is generally easier to deal with than the One I find in\nScripture, Tradition and in the better movements of my own heart. The real God,\nthe God who reveals Himself, is a jealous God, a God who requires repentance\nand fidelity, perseverance and stability. He requires me to stop doing things I\nenjoy, like gossip and over-eat as ways of keeping anxiety or fear at bay.\nInstead He calls on me to cut off fear in a deliberate choice to trust Him, to\ncast my anxious mind into the fire of His love, to risk everything for Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No way talking to a God like that will ever be boring. And\nno wonder, perhaps, that I\u2019d frankly rather tolerate a certain level of dullness\nin talking to that version of myself I call \u201cGod\u201d than let the real Lord reign\nin my life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course there are kinds of idols than the undemanding\nbanality that I\u2019ve specialized in crafting in my head. Some idols are far from\nboring, at least at first. Some produce fine emotions, or at least a kind of\nsentimentality, that satisfies for a while. Some idols are even more bizarre,\nfrankly scary, like the so-called \u201cgod\u201d who demands constant sacrifices of\npleasure, relationships and other good things of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the sure sign of every kind of idol-worship is that,\neventually, the payoff stops. Sooner or later the idol fails us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The psalmist begins his great book by telling us that the\nrighteous \u201cdelights\u201d in the law of the Lord. The Word of the true God does not\nfail, however difficult it may be to approach it, however much we need to repent,\nbelieve, trust, hope and reform our lives in order to receive that Word. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If prayer is boring, let me suggest that the last thing I\nshould do is try to fix my way of praying: looking for a more \u201cdynamic\u201d parish,\nor a more \u201cinteresting\u201d spirituality or experiment with a new kind of church\nmusic, or art or architecture. Chances are I\u2019m not bored by prayer, but by\nmyself. Chances are the problem isn\u2019t my way of praying, but my way of living. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blessed is the man, says that same first psalm, whose\ndelight is in the Law of the Lord, and who meditates on that law day and night.\nBlessed is the man, in other words, who prays without ceasing to the God, the\nreal God, who\u2019s creating and re-creating Spirit never disappoints. And let\u2019s be\nreally honest. Isn\u2019t that the One we\u2019re looking for?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Let\u2019s be honest. Prayer can be very boring!
