Just imagine for a moment that you have no home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What will you do for meals today? Where will you\nshower? Where will you sleep? If you have children, how will you provide for\nthem? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And how will you cope with being homeless tomorrow,\nnext week, next month? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Such imaginations are distressing. Aren\u2019t they? But\nlet\u2019s not allow these distressing imaginations to cause us to ignore the sad\ncrisis facing so many children, women and men: the crisis of having no place to\ncall home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead let\u2019s make an effort to better understand why\nthis devastating crisis exists. And what we can do to help end it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its 2018 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to\nCongress, The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) stated\nthat on a single night in 2018, approximately 553,000 people were homeless in\nthe United States. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The HUD number of 553,000 homeless people is considered very\nlow by numerous homeless advocacy organizations. One reason is that HUD does\nnot attempt to include the number of homeless persons who are temporarily\nstaying with other people \u2013 often needing to move from one location to another\n(see: HUD 2018 report<\/a>).\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the U.S. Department of Education, during the 2013-14 school year, more than 1.3 million homeless children and youth were enrolled in public schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But no matter how we look at it, there are definitely lots\nof people in the U.S. who do not have a home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To help find out why so many people are homeless, I\nspoke with Annie Leomporra, grassroots analyst for The National Coalition for\nthe Homeless (see: https:\/\/nationalhomeless.org\/<\/a>).\nShe said there are many factors that contribute to homelessness, but the most\nimportant reasons people find themselves homeless are due to the lack of affordable housing,\nlack of livable wage jobs, and the lack of access to general healthcare and\nmental healthcare. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She added, \u201cWe need affordable health care that does\nnot keep people waiting up to six months to see a mental health care provider.\nHomeless people have a life span of only around 50 to 60 years. People are\ndying every day on the streets from treatable illnesses. Because healthcare\nisn\u2019t available to all, their illnesses go unchecked.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also spoke with Paul Boden, director of the Western\nRegional Advocacy Project \u2013 a homeless advocacy organization based in San\nFrancisco \u2013 who also emphasized the prime importance of building enough\naffordable housing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boden highlighted the fact that the mass homelessness we\nnow have today was nonexistent prior to the early 1980s, largely due, unlike\ntoday, to the federal government\u2019s commitment back then to appropriating much\nmore money for large scale construction of affordable housing for low and\nmoderate income people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In stark contrast to today\u2019s Congress, 70 years ago\nCongress passed \u201cThe Housing Act of 1949\u201d with the objective to provide \u201ca\ndecent home and a suitable living environment for every American family\u201d (see: https:\/\/bit.ly\/33Ib22l<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boden said, \u201cNothing ends homelessness like a home.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So please urge your two U.S. senators and\ncongressperson to end homelessness by appropriating the increased funding\nnecessary to provide affordable housing for every homeless person, as well as\nhealth care and a living wage for all. These are not give-a- ways; these are\nGod-given human rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And let\u2019s be mindful that homeless people are persons,\nhuman beings like you and me who deserve and need our kindness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the spirit of the Beatitudes: \u201cBlessed are those who help the homeless, for they shall find a home in heaven.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
